In A Van Down By The River
In A Van Down By The River is my newest song.
I wrote, produced, sang and played all the instruments.
A note on my working method: The lyrics were freestyled, and I create the music improvisationally, over multiple passes, into Reason, Pro Tools and Final Cut Pro.
In A Van Down By The River
Music & Lyrics by David Tarleton
___________________________________________
You picked me off the street,
Gave me something to eat,
Bought me some new shoes,
Babe, you got nothing to lose,
I got nothing,
I got nothing at all.
Some days…
Some days I wish I had more,
Those days are getting more often than before.
But what can you do?
What can you do?
The Man keeps you blue,
Gives you nothing to do,
Just leaves you to stew
About nothing:
Nothing but craziness.
Stew about nothing,
Stew about nothing but craziness.
After she walked out on me
With a baby of three,
There wasn’t much left of me.
These days I’m sleeping
In a van down by the river.
I swim in the river some days,
And some days I have a little barbeque,
And some days I shoot up smack,
And some days I pass out in a puddle of my own vomit.
Buddy can you spare a quarter?
Ma’am can you spare that dime?
Buddy can you spare a quarter?
Mister do you have the time?
Can’t you see me? (x4)
No, not at all. (x3)
When you go out to your garden,
And find me asleep in the petunias,
Just be nice.

Great job! Wish I could write songs like that! *jealous*
Thank you both so much. It means a lot to me that you both liked the song.
I haven't released the CD yet, I'm still working on it. But, if you go to my MUSIC page, you'll see a bunch of songs there as a work in progress.
I've mostly produced my own music, but I have produced a few other people's music - what kind of music do you make?
Thanks, superman, for the suggestion, but I think I'll stick with the current lyrics. :)
I freestyled the lyrics one night (you're hearing the first take), and the line just popped out of the deep recesses of my brain when I got to that part. So, while the line is definitely from SNL, I wasn't premeditatedly referencing it.
And then when I was done, I thought it was the perfect thing to call the song.
You should change the lyrics and make them about Chris Farley's character on SNL! I wrote the theme song for my blog - check it out if you dare...
The lyrics are universal.
Have you released the CD?
Can you produce my own songs?
I have recorded two songs since 1984 to date.
I want to record songs for a singles CD.
