An urban, gothic fairy tale inspired by the Russian folk tales of Baba Yaga, and one of David's earliest films as writer-director.
Shot on 35mm as a twenty-minute short, Dinner was David's M.F.A. thesis film at the University of Southern California. It tells the story of Jack, who wants to marry Baba Yaga's daughter in a fantasy version of Los Angeles, blending fairy-tale menace with city grit. It premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City and went on to play the Sci-Fi Channel and festivals across the country, earning worldwide distribution.
The film marked an early turn toward the eerie, morally charged genre instincts that would later run through Hunter and the social-issue work.
